Minimum qualifications:

  • Experience with assembly of mechanical or electrical systems, or performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols.
  • Ability to lift/move 23kg (50lb) of equipment as required and ability to exert yourself physically over extended periods of time, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling and lifting.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including working weekends, night shifts, holidays and on shift-based schedules as required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Completion of the online Google IT Support Professional Certificate program.
  • 2 years of experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols.
  • Experience with performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on IT equipment, or a similar role (e.g., Systems Administration, Network Deployment Engineer, Help Desk Technician, etc.).
  • Experience working within a data center or networking operation center environment.
  • Ability to collaborate and partner with teams to overcome challenges, and adapt to changes in a dynamic work environment.

About The Job

Google isn't just a software company. The Hardware Operations team is responsible for monitoring the state-of-the-art physical infrastructure behind Google's powerful search technology. As an Operations Technician, you'll install, configure, test, troubleshoot and maintain hardware (like servers and its components) and server software (like Google's Linux cluster). You'll also tackle the configuration of more complex components such as networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches and networking protocols. You'll participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans. A typical day involves manual movement and installation of racks, and while it can sometimes be physically demanding, you are excited to work with infrastructure that is at the cutting-edge of computer technology.

You install, configure, test and troubleshoot hardware (servers and components) and server software. You also manually move and install racks and servers.

As a Data Center Technician, you will deploy and maintain Google's advanced data center server and network infrastructure by installing, configuring, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing hardware and server software. You will also take on the configuration of more complex components such as networks, routers, bridges, and switches. You will participate in or lead local project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans. A typical day involves movement and installation of equipment, and while it can sometimes be physically demanding, you're excited to work with infrastructure of computer technology to ensure Google Data Center quality and reliability.

  • Learn and apply skills in repairing and troubleshooting different machine platforms.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and resolve critical technical issues.
  • Test and troubleshoot new server and network hardware components and designs.
  • Install and maintain switches, routers and other networking gear.
  • Configure and troubleshoot Linux OS-related issues.
