Technician(s)

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, working with more than 200 ophthalmologists and visual scientists in Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland, is committed to advancing patient services, research, and training and education to the highest quality in all major areas of ophthalmology and visual sciences. We are also dedicated to worthwhile community programmes and public education projects. The Department, always in search of excellence,is looking for candidates to take up positions in our clinical and research (academic, community and translational)programmes involving ophthalmic investigations, public education, out-reach, and ophthalmic studies on disease entities, including children eye diseases autoimmune diseases, ocular surface diseases, refractive errors, ocular cancers, dry eye disease, thyroid eye diseases, glaucoma, and retina diseases. We are highly committed to supporting the career development of all staff members.

The appointee(s) will be responsible for 2 to 3 work duties depending on interest and capability. Duties include (a) handling genetics work, such as DNA/RNA extraction and sequencing, single cell RNA sequencing, and genotyping (b) assisting in cell and animal work, such as stem cell and organoid culture, experimental animal maintenance and welfare (c) operating GC/Q-TOF-MS to analyze chemical compounds in patient samples (d) assisting in daily laboratory operations (e) performing database development and data analysis in eye health care and research project and (f) performing other departmental duties as assigned. In-house training will be provided where appropriate.

Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Health Sciences, or related disciplines (ii) basic research laboratory experience in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry or analytical chemistry (iii) proficiency in standard laboratory equipment and techniques (iv) experience in handling patient samples, such as blood, tear, and ocular tissues (v) a strong quantitative background in data analysis using R, SPSS or other statistical packages (vi) a responsible, mature, effective, and forward-looking work attitude and (vii) personal integrity, sincerity and good team spirit at work. Having knowledge of advanced statistical modelling would be an advantage.

Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for up to 2 years (with contract-end gratuity for a 2-year contract), renewable subject to good performance and mutual agreement.
