Job Description

As an SSD System Design Engineer at Micron Technology, you will be responsible for end-to-end system design, architecture definition, and product execution of Solid State Drive (SSD) solutions from concept through high-volume manufacturing.

This role focuses on system architecture, integration, and cross-functional technical leadership, ensuring SSD products meet performance, power, reliability, and customer requirements. You will collaborate across firmware, hardware, NAND, validation, and manufacturing teams to drive system-level design decisions, product characterization, and issue resolution.

Main Responsibilities

System Architecture & Design

  • Define and drive system-level architecture and design specifications for SSD products

  • Translate product requirements (MRD, customer, OCP) into system-level design and trade-offs

  • Determine performance, power, thermal, and reliability targets

  • Ensure subsystem integration across firmware, ASIC, hardware, and NAND

System Integration & Product Execution

  • Lead system integration across the full product lifecycle

  • Drive product characterization including:

  • Performance and power characterization

  • Margin analysis and system behavior evaluation

  • Prepare systems for silicon bring-up, product qualification, and production ramp

System Debug & Failure Analysis

  • Lead complex system-level debug across FW, hardware, and NAND domains

  • Perform failure analysis and root cause identification

  • Drive issue resolution with cross-functional teams

  • Develop and apply common debug methodologies and best practices

Validation Strategy & Test Architecture

  • Define system-level validation strategy and test approach

  • Ensure alignment between system design and test coverage

  • Drive development and improvement of test plans and Master Test Plan

  • Improve system testability and validation efficiency

Cross-functional Leadership

  • Lead technical alignment across global teams (firmware, hardware, validation, ASIC, manufacturing)

  • Drive architecture reviews, design decisions, and risk mitigation

  • Influence system trade-offs balancing performance, cost, schedule, and reliability

Other Responsibilities

  • Provide system-level technical support to internal teams and external customers

  • Support customer engagements, audits, and field issue resolution

  • Drive improvements in product yield, reliability, and manufacturability

  • Contribute to standardization of system engineering processes and methodologies

  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and engineering procedures

AI Responsibilities

  • Integrate AI-assisted tools and data-driven insights into system analysis, debug, and validation workflows to improve efficiency and decision-making

  • Identify opportunities to leverage AI for system modeling, failure analysis, and process improvement and share best practices within the team

Minimum Required Qualifications / Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field

  • Minimum 6-10 years of relevant experience in SSD, storage, or system engineering

  • Experience in product development lifecycle from design through manufacturing

Must Have Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of SSD architecture (controller, NAND, DRAM)

  • Knowledge of PCIe / NVMe (preferred), SATA or SAS interfaces

  • Experience with system-level debug, failure analysis, and integration

  • Experience with performance characterization and system analysis

  • Programming skills in Python and/or C

Must Have Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset

  • Effective communication skills for cross-functional collaboration across global teams

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced development environment

  • Strong ownership, initiative, and accountability

  • Attention to detail with focus on quality and execution

AI Requirements

  • Ability to apply baseline digital fluency and AI literacy to use AI-enabled tools responsibly for analysis, problem-solving, and productivity improvement

Highly Desirable / Preferred Skills

  • Experience with enterprise or datacenter SSD products

  • Experience with PCIe Gen5/Gen6 or advanced NVMe features

  • Familiarity with system modeling or performance simulation tools

  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing (HVM) environment

  • Experience in cross-site collaboration with global engineering teams
