About The Job
Our computational challenges are so big and unique we can't just buy our hardware, we've got to make it ourselves. Our Platforms Team designs and builds the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google's services. As a Mechanical Engineer you design and evaluate our data center systems, identifying product requirements and contributing to research and project planning. From the chip to chiller, you are responsible for designing and optimizing an architecture that will scale with Google's continued growth.
With your technical expertise, you lead and manage projects, develop product and process improvements, provide consultation to others and help facilitate training and development.
As a Senior Mechanical Test Engineer, you will bring mechanical, structural, thermal and mechatronics testing expertise to Google's design and test team. You will provide support to the Google Cloud Platforms organization, assisting engineers on product development of prototype systems under development. In this role, you will utilize equipment such as shaker tables, highly accelerated life testing (HALT), drop towers, robotic automation, material testing machines, metrology inspection, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and high speed cameras, Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV), strain gauges, accelerometers, modal hammer with force transducer and more.
You will be responsible for test plan development, fixture design, test setup, execution, troubleshooting and failure analysis, corrective actions and design updates, and documentation and debriefing to cross-functional stakeholders. You will also be coordinating day-to-day allocation of resources, ensuring that test equipment is calibrated, and that the lab is a safe environment to work in.
Our Platforms Infrastructure Engineering team designs and builds the hardware and software technologies that power all of Google's services. Our computational challenges are complex and unique, enabled by cutting-edge custom hardware designed and made in-house. Our Mechanical Product Design Engineering Team members work cross-functionally to design, build, and deploy the latest technology to support the needs of compute, storage, networking, and machine learning hardware.
Responsibilities
- Own Mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD) qualification testing and serve as Vibration Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead root-cause-analysis for HDD qualification issues, utilizing historical data and operational assessments to resolve performance degradation.
- Drive mechanical characterization by Modal Testing and Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) to identify structural resonances and failure modes.
- Design, produce, and assemble mechanical parts and assemblies for products and test fixtures; setup and conduct tests of testing units and investigate proposals for improving structures/assembly.
- Deliver comprehensive test planning and execution for HDD qualification and mechanical stress testing (e.g., transportation, operational vibration) through the entire product development life-cycle.
- Establish ownership of Shock and Vibration (S&V) testing for Product Introduction Engineering (PIE) Taiwan (TWN) programs, driving the validation of structural integrity and performance across rack, tray, and component levels.
