Qnity Senior Controls Engineer
The Qnity Global Automation team is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer for Integrated Operations. The selected candidate will provide leadership, which includes supporting a global community and supporting sites with project execution. The ideal candidate will have detailed expertise in programming, integrating, and commissioning automated equipment for discrete processes. Working in close collaboration with the Senior Design Engineer, this role will program the equipment to bring designs to life—driving commissioning, continuous improvement, and long-term maintainability. In addition, this candidate must have a concentration in PLC and motion control programming, HMI/SCADA development, robotic integration, and industrial networking. Controls development needs will range from improvements to existing manufacturing equipment to the development of new, custom-designed equipment. The engineer will be responsible for developing and vetting control concepts, proof-of-principle systems, prototypes, and commercial-scale equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop control systems for first-of-a-kind custom equipment, including conceptualizing new control architectures and automation strategies based on business requirements
- Collaborate closely with the Senior Design Engineer to program equipment for commissioning, performance improvements, and long-term maintainability, ensuring controls fully realize the mechanical design intent
- Ability to develop control software and architecture in a modular way that can be utilized in subsequent machines and flexible enough to reconfigure or change out components easily.
- Work with operations, maintenance, safety, and engineering to program and deploy control improvements to existing equipment
- Provide expertise in controls architecture and panel layout to support projects at the sites.
- Provide expertise in PLC and motion control programming, HMI/SCADA development, and robotic integration.
- Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at the site to understand the challenges they face and provide an automated solution. The solution must be engineered in a way that has minimal impact on the area's ability to produce, and is minimally invasive to our external customer change protocol
- Ability to collaborate with internal and external suppliers to specify, program, and qualify equipment controls.
- Ability to collaborate on multiple projects at the same time as a technical expert.
- Supports the EHS organization to assist with investigations and action items.
- Collaborate and support of the Qnity S1M machine safety standard for the Integrated Operations organization. Proactively address machine safety risks by participating in machine risk assessments (MRAs) and implementing safety-rated control functions during design and execution.
- Develop equipment standards to support the equipment from a leveraged engineering perspective and deploy the technology throughout the organization.
- Provides technical expertise for Management of Change, including technical reviewer of site MOC processes.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in a discrete manufacturing environment focused on controls engineering, PLC/HMI programming, and the commissioning and maintenance of automated equipment.
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation, or Computer Engineering with coursework concentration involving control systems and automation.
- Able to travel to manufacturing sites (average 30% of time)
- High proficiency with PLC programming platforms (e.g. Rockwell/Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, Omron, Mitsubishi) and HMI/SCADA software (e.g. Aveva InTouch, Ignition).
- Experience programming and integrating industrial robots (e.g. ABB, KUKA, Epson) and experience with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, OPC UA).
- Experience programming vision systems (e.g. Cognex, Keyence)
- Preferred: Experience with robotic simulation and offline programming environments including ABB RobotStudio and KUKA.Sim
- Experience with Machine Risk Assessments, Performance Level calculations, safety-rated control systems, and Validation Plans
- Experience with electrical and/or mechanical fabrication technology
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a challenging, diverse team environment in a respectful manner.
- Demonstration of influential leadership to lead & mentor
- Strong Interpersonal skills
- Highly motivated problem solver
