Job Description

Job Purpose

Based in the Design and Engineering Department, the Senior Electrical Engineer is an experienced technical specialist responsible for executing high-quality electrical engineering design, technical calculations, and drawing packages for assigned new-build vessel projects. This role focuses purely on technical delivery-translating project specification /client requirements and class rules into compliant, robust, and detailed engineering outputs throughout the design and construction phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical Design & Technical Calculations: Calculate, size, and develop comprehensive electrical design packages for assigned projects, including load analysis, short-circuit calculations, voltage drop studies, single-line diagrams (SLDs), schematic diagrams, cable schedules, and power distribution layouts.
  • Technical Documentation & Drafting: Prepare detailed technical specifications, design philosophy documents, purchase specifications, equipment list schedules, and engineering calculation reports.
  • Class & Regulatory Deliverables: Develop and compile electrical drawing packages for Classification Society submission. Incorporate surveyor comments and update design documentation to secure approval.
  • Procurement & Technical Evaluation: Perform technical evaluations for all electrical equipment (generators, switchboards, PMS, VFDs, navigation/communication suites), evaluate vendor technical submittals, and ensure vendor data aligns with vessel design requirements.
  • Design Coordination & Reporting: Participate in technical clarification meetings with clients, class surveyors, and equipment vendors alongside the Lead Engineer. Prepare and submit regular technical status updates and progress reports to the Lead Engineer.
  • Inter-Disciplinary Alignment: Coordinate with Naval Architects, Mechanical Engineers, and Structural Designers to resolve local space, weight, cable tray routing, and physical layout interfaces.
  • Production & Yard Support: Respond to Request for Information (RFIs) from the shipyard, provide technical clarifications for site queries, and update production/as-built drawings during the construction, testing, and sea trials phases.

Requirements

Education & Language

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Marine Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English, with the ability to prepare technical reports and participate in project discussions..

Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on electrical engineering design experience in a ship design institute, shipyard design office, or marine engineering consultancy.
  • Solid track record of performing core electrical design calculations, drawing preparation, and equipment selection for marine new-build projects.
  • Practical design experience with high-speed craft, aluminum vessels, naval/patrol craft, or commercial vessels is highly advantageous.
  • Hands-on experience calculating and designing for hybrid-electric or pure electric marine propulsion systems is a distinct advantage.
  • Candidates who are immediately available to start work will be prioritized.

Technical Competencies

  • Design Software & Tools: High proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical hands-on experience using electrical calculation tools (e.g., ETAP, PTW/SKM) and 3D modeling tools (e.g., AVEVA Marine, Cadmatic) for cable tray and equipment layout design.
  • Marine Systems Knowledge: In-depth technical knowledge of shipboard power generation and distribution, Low/High Voltage systems, Power Management Systems (PMS), Integrated Automation Systems (IAS), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), navigation, and communication suites.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Sound understanding of Classification Society rules (ABS, BV, DNV, etc.), IMO/SOLAS regulations, and IEC 60092 standards.
  • Execution Focus: Strong analytical, technical calculation, and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of self-motivation to execute assigned design tasks accurately and meet strict engineering deadlines.
