Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) media organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., with editorial and operational bureaus in Taipei, Bangkok, and Seoul. A congressionally funded grantee of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), RFA operates with full editorial independence.
Our mission is to provide accurate, uncensored news and information to people living in countries where a free press does not exist. RFA produces journalism in multiple Asian languages and delivers news through web, radio, video, podcasts, social media, and other digital platforms.
The International Desk serves as RFA's English-language newsroom. Working across RFA's language desks, the desk identifies, enhances, and publishes the organization's most important journalism for global audiences through English web, multimedia, podcasts, newsletters, social media, and other digital platforms. The desk also produces original English reporting, enterprise journalism, and special projects that advance RFA's mission of providing accurate, independent, and uncensored news.
Job Summary
The Senior Editor is responsible for the day-to-day editorial management of RFA's English-language newsroom. Working under the direction of the Editor in Charge, the Senior Editor oversees daily news planning, story assignments, editorial development, publication workflows, and the production of original English journalism.
The Senior Editor leads the daily editorial operation by identifying the most significant stories from RFA's language desks, assigning original reporting, coordinating cross-language coverage, and ensuring timely publication across the International Desk's digital platforms. The position supervises journalists, maintains editorial quality and consistency, and helps expand the global reach and impact of RFA's journalism through outstanding English-language reporting.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Leadership & News Planning
- Lead the daily editorial operation of the International Desk, under the direction of Editor In Charge.
- Identify, prioritize, and assign stories for English publication based on editorial significance and audience impact.
- Oversee daily news planning, story development, publication schedules, and newsroom workflow.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and engaging English-language coverage across all digital platforms.
- Recommend enterprise reporting projects, special coverage, and editorial initiatives to the Editor in Charge.
Cross-Language Editorial Coordination
- Review reporting produced across RFA's language desks and identify stories for English publication.
- Coordinate with language desks editors to develop enterprise stories, investigations, and major breaking news coverage.
- Identify opportunities to combine reporting from multiple language desks into comprehensive English journalism.
Original Reporting & Content Development
- Supervise the production of original reporting, enterprise stories, interviews, explainers, and multimedia journalism.
- Guide journalists in developing original story ideas and enterprise reporting.
- Ensure English stories provide additional context, analysis, and international perspective beyond translated content.
- Oversee editorial quality throughout the reporting, writing, editing, and publishing process.
Staff Supervision & Professional Development
- Supervise the work of Senior Multiplatform Journalists and Multiplatform Journalists assigned to the International Desk.
- Provide editorial direction, coaching, mentoring, and constructive feedback.
- Assist the Editor in Charge with performance evaluations, workload planning, and newsroom development.
Editorial Standards & Workflow
- Maintain the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, verification, and editorial integrity.
- Ensure stories comply with RFA's editorial policies, legal standards, and digital publishing requirements.
- Coordinate publication schedules across the English website, newsletters, podcasts, video, social media, and other digital platforms.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, International Affairs, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible journalism experience, including substantial experience in editing, newsroom leadership, and supervising journalists.
- Demonstrated experience leading newsroom operations, assigning stories, developing enterprise reporting, and managing editorial workflows.
- Outstanding editorial judgment and experience managing complex editorial decisions in a fast-paced newsroom.
- Experience producing and managing multiplatform journalism across web, podcasts, video, newsletters, social media, and other digital platforms.
- Strong knowledge of Asian affairs, democracy, human rights, regional security, and international issues.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior and mid-level journalists and editors, providing structured editorial guidance, draft review, and developmental feedback.
- High degree of fluency in English and professional working proficiency in one of RFA's languages, with exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading editorial teams in multilingual or international news organizations.
- Experience managing cross-language editorial collaboration.
- Experience overseeing enterprise reporting, investigative journalism, or special editorial projects.
- Familiarity with SEO, audience analytics, content management systems, and digital audience engagement strategies.
- Awards, recognitions, or notable editorial achievements demonstrating journalistic excellence.
- Possession of valid work authorization for Taiwan is highly advantageous for this role.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
This is a full-time position based in Taipei, Taiwan. The role requires flexibility in working hours to support breaking news coverage and coordinate with editorial teams across multiple time zones. Occasional domestic and international travel may be required.
