Job Description

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Assistant position in the School of Governance and Policy Science to assist with research projects analysing Chinese politics and political economy with computational techniques. We seek self-motivated individuals with strong academic and research capabilities, particularly in data analysis, paper writing, and project coordination. While technical knowledge is expected, we value independent thinkers who can contribute original ideas and help execute research plans.

Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor's degree or preferably a Master%27s degree in relevant disciplines, including Computational Social Science, Data Science, Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, Sociology, etc. (ii) strong programming skills in R and/or Python and experience with Data Annotation, Textual Analysis, Machine Learning, and Large Language Models (iii) understanding of the Chinese government and policy systems (iv) a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese and (v) the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Familiarity with ML model training and LLM application is a plus.

The appointee will be responsible for (a) assisting with data annotation for large-scale government documents (b) assisting with training machine learning models for text classification (c) conducting qualitative and quantitative data analyses (d) contributing to manuscript and grant drafting and (e) performing other research-related tasks as assigned.

Appointment will be made on contract basis for one year, commencing as soon as possible and renewable subject to good performance and funding availability.
