About the Role

Trend Micro is seeking a seasoned Product Counsel to support its global consumer business, TrendLife, as a full-time, permanent member of the Trend Micro legal team. This is a senior individual contributor role embedded with the product and business teams in Taipei, providing substantive legal leadership across consumer-facing software, mobile applications, and the privacy and regulatory frameworks that govern them.

The successful candidate will be a trusted legal partner to product, engineering, marketing, and business leadership - someone who has operated at this level before, knows how to influence without authority, and builds the kind of relationships that make the legal function a competitive advantage rather than a gate. Critically, this role sits within a global legal organization spanning multiple regions, and will require close, day-to-day collaboration with in-house counsel counterparts in other geographies to ensure consistent, coordinated legal support across Trendlife's worldwide consumer portfolio.

What You'll Do

Product & Commercial Legal Support

  • Serve as the primary legal partner for Trendlife's consumer product and business teams, advising on product development, feature launches, go-to-market strategy, and commercial agreements from inception through execution.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate consumer-facing agreements including EULAs, Terms of Service, subscription agreements, and platform partner contracts.

  • Draft, review and negotiate commercial vendor/partner agreements

  • Review in-app disclosures, consent flows, and marketing materials for legal accuracy and regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Support app store submissions and ongoing compliance with platform requirements (Apple App Store, Google Play, and regional equivalents).

  • Identify and proactively address legal risk across the product roadmap, providing clear, business-oriented guidance that enables teams to move quickly without exposing the company to unnecessary exposure.

Privacy & Data Protection

  • Own consumer privacy legal support for Trendlife globally, advising on applicable obligations across GDPR (EU/UK), CCPA/CPRA (California), APPI (Japan), PDPA (Taiwan/Thailand), and other applicable frameworks.

  • Review privacy notices, consent mechanisms, and data processing activities for new and existing features, ensuring multi-jurisdictional compliance.

  • Advise on cross-border data transfer mechanisms and assist with data subject rights request workflows.

  • Collaborate with Privacy, Security, and Engineering teams on DPIAs, privacy-by-design implementation, and product incident response.

AI Governance & Emerging Technology

  • Provide legal guidance on consumer-facing AI features, including disclosures, automated decision-making notices, and compliance with the EU AI Act and other applicable AI regulations.

  • Monitor developments in AI and technology regulation across key consumer markets and translate them into actionable advice for product and business stakeholders.

  • Support internal AI governance documentation and processes, including risk assessments, transparency reporting, and regulatory readiness.

Stakeholder Engagement & Cross-Regional Collaboration

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with senior internal stakeholders across product, engineering, marketing, finance, and business development - acting as a go-to legal resource who understands the business and earns influence over time.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with in-house legal colleagues across Trend Micro's global regions, including the Americas, EMEA, and other APAC markets, to ensure legal positions are consistent, coordinated, and informed by regional nuance.

  • Participate actively in cross-functional working groups, product reviews, and business planning sessions, providing timely, practical legal input that shapes decisions upstream rather than downstream.

  • Represent the legal function in senior leadership discussions, synthesizing complex legal issues into clear business context and recommended courses of action.

Outside Counsel & Legal Operations

  • Manage outside counsel relationships for consumer matters, including engagement scoping, work product review, and budget oversight.

  • Develop and maintain legal templates, playbooks, and self-service guidance to improve efficiency and scale the legal function's impact across the business.

  • Track legislative and regulatory developments in key consumer markets and ensure relevant stakeholders are informed and prepared.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • J.D. or equivalent law degree license to practice law in at least one relevant jurisdiction.

  • 8-10 years of legal experience with a substantial focus on consumer-facing software, mobile applications, or digital products - in-house experience at a technology company required.

  • Deep expertise in at least two major global privacy frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, APPI) with demonstrated ability to advise across multiple jurisdictions simultaneously.

  • Extensive experience drafting and negotiating EULAs, Terms of Service, and consumer product agreements, with sound independent judgment on when to escalate versus resolve.

  • Demonstrated track record of building strong, trust-based relationships with senior business and product stakeholders - not just advising, but partnering.

  • Experience working as part of a global, cross-regional in-house legal team, with strong instincts for collaboration, consistency, and navigating different legal and cultural contexts.

  • Proven ability to manage outside counsel effectively, including scoping, quality control, and budget management.

  • Business-level proficiency in both Mandarin and English (written and spoken).

  • Fluency using AI tools as a routine part of legal work - for research, drafting, analysis, and process efficiency.

Preferred

  • Prior experience advising on AI-specific legal frameworks, including the EU AI Act, and hands-on involvement with AI product feature reviews.

  • Experience with app store legal compliance processes at scale.

  • Background in cybersecurity, security technology, or data protection engineering contexts.

  • Familiarity with Taiwan-specific consumer protection laws and regulatory enforcement patterns.

  • Exposure to cross-regional privacy program management, including data mapping, vendor assessment, and incident response coordination.

Who We're Looking For

This is not a role for someone who treats legal review as a checklist. We're looking for a lawyer who is genuinely invested in the business, takes ownership of outcomes, and has the seniority and confidence to push back when needed - while remaining constructive, practical, and collaborative. You should know how to read a room, adapt your communication style to different audiences, and build the kind of credibility that makes your counsel sought out rather than worked around.

You'll be joining a global legal team that values teamwork, directness, intellectual curiosity, and a low-ego approach to getting things done. Experience with AI as a work tool isn't a nice-to-have - we expect our lawyers to be working at the frontier of how legal functions operate.
