Job Description

About us: iconic brand, tiny company.

Polaroid was founded in 1937 by one of the most seminal innovators of the 20th century, Edwin Land. His motto was, don't undertake a project unless it is manifestly important and nearly impossible. In 2008, Polaroid shuttered its last factory, but a group of diehard fans came together as The Impossible Project to save instant film. Over 10 years later that startup acquired what was left of Polaroid and today we're again a small group of people passionate about changing the world through great products.

Job Summary

At Polaroid, we're dedicated to pushing the boundaries of innovation, and we're seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer to join our team. You will contribute to the development of cutting-edge mechanical systems across our product lines. You'll work closely with your cross-functional counterparts to design, develop, verify, and validate mechanical solutions, playing a crucial role in driving our products forward.

This role involves collaboration with sourcing, manufacturing, to bring products from design to mass production via our product lifecycle framework. If you're a hands-on problem solver with a passion for mechanical engineering and a desire to grow your skills in a dynamic environment, we encourage you to apply and be a part of our journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Systems Development: Collaborate with engineers in the project team to design and develop mechanical solutions for Polaroid's products. From design concept to mass production.
  • Testing & Root Cause Analysis: Assist in testing, debugging, and troubleshooting mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Documentation and Communication: Contribute to clear and comprehensive documentation of mechanical designs, implementation details, and test procedures. Communicate effectively with team members to share knowledge and findings.
  • Collaboration with External Partners: Work closely with JDMs (Joint Development Manufacturers), CMs (Contract Manufacturers), and key suppliers to ensure part compliance. Ensure that system and subsystem assembly and test fixtures are reliable and efficient.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with sourcing, manufacturing, and other operations teams in later development stages to bring products to mass production.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering. Actively participate in learning opportunities and apply new knowledge to improve our products and processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in mechanical design and development.
  • Proficiency in using design tools such as CAD software (Creo) for 2D/3D CAD building.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design concepts for CNC, molding tooling and Sheetmetal tooling.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Passionate about photography.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with high-volume consumer electronics (cameras).
  • Knowledge of precision and optomechanical systems.
  • Strong in prototyping, testing, and validation.
  • Experience with quality tools (DFMEA/DFMA, tolerance analysis).
  • Familiar with product development and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Knowledge of assembly processes and cosmetic finishes.
  • Experience with Windchill, COMSOL, and Minitab.
