As our business continues to grow globally, we are looking for a Legal Counsel (m/f/d) to provide strategic and commercially focused legal support to our Japan business and, where applicable, the wider APAC region.
In this role, you will act as a trusted legal partner to senior management and cross-functional teams, helping the business achieve its commercial objectives while effectively managing legal, regulatory, and compliance risks across the region.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Commercial & Business Legal Support:
- Provide practical, commercially focused legal advice on a broad range of commercial, corporate, and operational matters.
- Draft, review, negotiate, and manage commercial agreements, including distribution, supply, procurement, licensing, marketing, technology, and service agreements.
- Partner closely with Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain, Procurement, HR, Finance, and Regulatory teams to provide practical legal solutions that support business objectives.
Compliance & Risk Management:
- Lead and support compliance initiatives covering areas such as anti-bribery and corruption, competition law, data privacy, consumer protection, and internal investigations.
- Advise business stakeholders on legal and regulatory risks and help develop practical approaches to mitigate them.
- Support corporate governance, risk management, and other legal initiatives across the Japan and APAC businesses.
Disputes & Regional Legal Support:
- Manage litigation, employment disputes, product liability matters, and relationships with external counsel.
- Collaborate with APAC, ANZ, and global legal teams on cross-border transactions, strategic initiatives, and regional legal projects.
- Work closely with senior stakeholders and regional legal teams to ensure consistent and effective legal support across markets.
- Perform other legal and business-related duties and projects as required to support the broader Group Legal function.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Qualified lawyer with 8–12 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
- Strong in-house legal experience, ideally gained within a multinational FMCG, consumer products, retail, manufacturing, or healthcare company.
- Strong experience in commercial contracting, business partnering, and stakeholder management, with the ability to provide practical and commercially minded legal advice.
- Experience supporting multiple jurisdictions across APAC; exposure to ANZ is an advantage.
- Fluent in English with business-level or native Japanese proficiency.
- Strong written and verbal communication, negotiation, and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- A proactive, hands-on, and solution-oriented approach, with strong ownership and accountability.
- Comfortable working independently and managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, matrixed, and international organization.
- Open-minded and adaptable, with the ability to collaborate effectively across different cultures, functions, and markets.
