Job Description

The Head of Sanctions and Controls Strategy is responsible for developing and executing a strategic vision for sanctions and controls that aligns with the organization's objectives. This includes leading cross-functional initiatives to enhance compliance and control effectiveness, providing expertise and training on sanctions-related matters, and establishing robust compliance policies and procedures. The role involves overseeing the implementation and management of screening processes, designing transaction monitoring systems, and collaborating with technology teams to leverage data analytics. Additionally, the position requires developing client risk assessment models, maintaining a comprehensive internal control framework, and serving as a key liaison with regulatory bodies. The Head of Sanctions and Controls Strategy will build and lead a high-performing team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and risk awareness within the organization.

Position Responsibilities:

The Head Sanctions & Controls Strategy, along with the Global CAMLO, is responsible for:

1.Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for sanctions and controls that aligns with organizational objectives.

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to enhance compliance and control effectiveness.

2.Sanctions Compliance:

  • Provide expertise and training on sanctions-related matters to internal teams.

  • Establish and maintain robust sanctions compliance policies and procedures.

  • Continuously monitor and assess the landscape of international sanctions to ensure proactive compliance.

3.Screening and Monitoring:

  • Oversee the implementation and management of screening processes to ensure effective identification of risks related to sanctions, politically exposed persons (PEPs), and adverse media.

  • Design and implement transaction monitoring systems to identify and mitigate potential risks.

  • Collaborate with technology teams to leverage data analytics for improved screening and monitoring capabilities.

4.Risk Assessment Models:

  • Develop and refine client risk rating models to accurately assess and manage client risk profiles.

  • Integrate advanced data analytics to enhance model effectiveness and adapt to changing risk dynamics.

5.Internal Controls:

  • Design, implement, and maintain a comprehensive internal con trol framework that spans all business operations.

  • Conduct regular reviews and testing to ensure controls are effective and aligned with regulatory standards.

6.Technology and Innovation:

  • In partnership with Compliance Technology partners, support the integration of technology solutions to enhance compliance and control processes.

  • Stay abreast of technological advancements and regulatory trends to inform strategic decision-making.

7.Regulatory Engagement:

  • Serve as a key liaison with regulatory bodies concerning compliance and controls.

  • In partnership with country compliance, support the timely and accurate reporting to regulatory authorities on sanctions and controls.

Required Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in sanctions, controls, screening, compliance, or risk management, preferably in a government, regulatory, legal, and/or financial sector role.Demonstrated successful track record in designing, developing, and implementing large-scale, standardized, and global sanctions and controls monitoring systems and processes.

  • Proven leadership capabilities with a track record of setting direction in a complex operating environment and leading a team of high-performing professionals.

  • Superior written and oral communication skills with the ability to translate a complex regulatory environment into business language.

  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to effectively lead with integrity and credibility and help drive compliance programs throughout a complex organization.

  • Team-oriented approach to managing internal relationships and collaborating across business units and functional departments.
