Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
- 5 years of experience in software development and protocol stack engineering (e.g., RRC) and coding in C/C++/Python.
- Experience with cross-layer collaboration (e.g., L1/L2/NAS).
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in NAS or L2 protocols.
- Experience in full-stack engineering, backend (Java/Python/Go/C++) and frontend (JavaScript/TypeScript/HTML/CSS).
- Experience in practical AI or LLM mechanisms for process or performance improvement.
- Experience with SQL and Spanner.

As a Modem Firmware Engineer in the Pixel Mobile Wireless (PMW) team, you will design, develop, and optimize the RRC protocol stack. It covers:
- Research of RRC layer features
- Analysis of RRC layer issues
- AI-based tool development
- Call performance analysis
Your work will span across upper layers (e.g., NAS, RIL, IMS), lower layers and infrastructure teams ensuring product quality and robust performance. You will also be responsible for the core AI-related automation or tool design and deployment.
The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.
Responsibilities
- Develop modem software and verify end-to-end modem feature functionalities and performance for RRC (Radio Resource Control) protocol.
- Solve complex system-level problems related to mobility, data performance, and improve Pixel product user experience.
- Identify key performance scenarios and reproduce the scenario in the lab environment for further research and development for more optimized solutions.
- Debug, analyze and fix modem issues from factory, certification (GCF/PTCRB/IOT), field and end users. Closely work with vendors and solution providers on modem protocol design and optimization.
- Optimize process by using AI-related strategy, including but not limited to issue analysis automation, and testing automation.
