Position Overview
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Asia is the senior regional clinical executive responsible for shaping and delivering the health, medical, and clinical risk strategy for the health insurance business across Asia. This role drives medical excellence across provider management, claims, product development, clinical governance, population health, and health services innovation.
The CMO partners closely with product, provider management, claims, operations, distribution, and regional market leadership to ensure the company achieves profitable growth, strong medical governance, and superior health outcomes for customers.
This position plays a critical role in strengthening the company's reputation as a trusted health insurer and partner-leveraging clinical insights, evidence based care, and ecosystem partnerships to drive value, differentiation, and competitive advantage.
As part of a newly established Regional Health Team in Asia, this role will work across multiple functional areas and multiple markets, to deliver impact and real business value. The Team will support the local business units to leverage, enhance and accelerate their existing capabilities to implement and execute prioritized health initiatives, whilst minimizing disruption.
Position Responsibilities:
1. Medical & Health Strategy
Define and execute the regional medical and provider management strategy tailored to insurance profitability and customer health outcomes.
Provide clinical oversight and strategic counsel to regional executives and country CEOs.
Identify emerging health risks, trends, and cost drivers to guide business strategy, pricing, and portfolio performance.
2. Provider Network Strategy & Clinical Partnerships
Support network strategy development, including quality benchmarks, credentialing, clinical standards, and utilization oversight.
Establish strategic relationships with healthcare providers, clinical associations, academic institutions, and regulatory bodies.
Negotiate or advise on clinically informed provider partnerships that improve cost, quality, and access.
3. Product, Proposition & Health Services Innovation
Collaborate with product and marketing leaders to build clinically robust health, protection, and wellness propositions.
Drive development of p reventive health programs, digital health services, disease management programs, and care navigation offerings.
Evaluate and integrate new technologies (telehealth, AI triage, remote monitoring, digital therapeutics) to enhance customer value and operational efficiency.
Advise on design and clinical viability of health ecosystem partnerships (hospitals, clinics, digital platforms, pharma).
4. Population Health, Analytics & Cost Containment
Leverage health data, morbidity trends, and claims analytics to identify drivers of health cost, utilization, and risk.
Lead development of interventions that reduce medical inflation, improve outcomes, and enhance customer experience.
Partner with actuarial teams on experience studies, pricing assumptions, and trend management strategies.
5. Leadership of Regional Medical Teams
Lead, mentor, and develop country CMOs and medical teams across Asia.
Create a strong culture of clinical excellence, ethics, and cross-market collaboration.
Provide visible medical leadership during crises, health emergencies, or emerging disease outbreaks.
6. Medical Governance, Risk & Compliance
Establish and oversee medical governance and clinical risk frameworks across the region.
Ensure compliance with local insurance and health regulations, clinical standards, and ethics requirements.
Strengthen controls relating to medical decision-making in underwriting, claims, reinsurance discussions, and appeals.
Lead medical audit processes and quality reviews related to claims adjudication, appropriateness of care, fraud/waste/abuse mitigation, and provider utilization patterns.
7. Claims Support
Collaborate with claims teams to improve appropriateness of care, manage high cost conditions, identify fraud indicators, and enhance claims decision quality.
Contribute to guidelines for long-term disability, critical illness, cancer, and complex chronic condition assessment.
Required Qualifications:
Medical degree, board certification or postgraduate specialization preferred.
10-15+ years of clinical, insurance, or health systems experience with significant leadership responsibility.
Strong understanding of life, health, and medical insurance products, underwriting, and claims processes.
Deep experience with clinical governance, healthcare systems, and regulatory environments across Asia.
Demonstrated ability to work across diverse markets and influence senior stakeholders.
Experience in insurance, managed care, health economics, digital health, or population health management.
Experience with health analytics, risk modeling, or medical cost containment.
Strategic thinking with strong business and financial acumen
Clinical credibility and sound medical judgment
Expertise in medical underwriting and claims governance
Ability to influence non clinical leaders and operate in a matrix environment
Strong communication and external representation skills
Data-driven with strong analytical problem-solving capabilities
