The Chartering Manager is responsible for managing the company's chartering and freight operations across dry bulk and container shipments, with a focus on steel, iron ore, coal, and scrap trades. This role oversees vessel fixtures, freight negotiations, and contract execution to optimize shipping costs and ensure reliable, compliant cargo movement.
Key Responsibilities
- Negotiate and fix vessels for dry bulk and container shipments, securing competitive freight rates and favorable terms.
- Manage chartering activities for steel, iron ore, coal, and/or scrap trades, ensuring cargo requirements are met efficiently.
- Draft, review, and negotiate charter party agreements, contracts of affreightment (COAs), and related shipping documentation.
- Monitor and manage laytime and demurrage calculations, resolving disputes and claims as they arise.
- Track freight market trends, vessel availability, and rate fluctuations to inform chartering strategy and decision-making.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with shipowners, brokers, charterers, and other industry stakeholders.
- Coordinate with operations, logistics, and trading teams to align chartering activities with shipment schedules and commercial objectives.
- Ensure all chartering activities comply with relevant maritime regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
- Prepare regular reports on freight costs, market conditions, and chartering performance for senior management.
- Support risk management by evaluating counterparty credibility, vessel suitability, and contractual exposure.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Logistics, Shipping, or a related commercial field.
- ICS (Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers) or equivalent qualification is a plus.
- Direct experience chartering for steel, iron ore, coal, and/or scrap trades strongly preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of chartering/freight experience, with demonstrated exposure to both dry bulk and container shipments.
- Strong working knowledge of charter party terms, COA structures, laytime/demurrage calculations, and freight market mechanics.
