Job Description

About TwinCounsel

TwinCounsel is an early-stage legal tech startup building an AI delegation platform for solo and small law firms. Founded by YC S17 alumni (Indivio, acquired by Cloudinary), we're a proven team applying our experience in automation and AI to transform how lawyers work.

Our platform connects to a lawyer's email inbox, automatically builds knowledge about their cases, and lets them delegate complex work in plain English like having an expert paralegal who never forgets anything. We've already validated 90% time savings with our design partner.

With founders based in the US and a growing engineering team in Taiwan, we're building world-class technology that transforms how lawyers work.

Our Engineering Philosophy

We believe great engineers care deeply about how they build and why they build. Our culture values both the craft of engineering excellence and the care for the users and problems we're solving. That's the TwinCounsel way.

The Role: Building Reliable Capabilities

As one of our first engineers, you'll shape both our product and engineering culture. You'll be the builder creating the reliable capabilities that power our AI platform. You'll own everything the AI agent needs to interact with the real world: extracting data from messy documents, connecting to external systems, and generating polished outputs.

Lawyers send us photos of speeding tickets taken on kitchen tables, screenshots of text message conversations, and PDFs exported from a dozen different systems. Your job is to turn that chaos into clean, structured data our AI can understand. When the AI decides to draft a subpoena, you build the tools that assemble it perfectly.

This is a hands-on role for someone who takes pride in building systems that just work. You'll design clear interfaces, handle every edge case, and ensure that when the AI calls your tools, they return correct results every single time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build document extraction pipelines parsing PDFs, images, screenshots, and email attachments into structured data
  • Develop capabilities for real-world document processing (photos of documents, messaging app screenshots, handwritten notes)
  • Create and maintain integrations with external systems (email providers, calendar APIs, legal practice management software)
  • Build document generation tools assembling legal documents from templates and extracted data
  • Design reliable data transformation pipelines with comprehensive error handling
  • Write extensive tests to cover edge cases and ensure tool reliability
  • Collaborate with AI Engineers to define clear interfaces between tools and agent workflows
  • Optimize performance for processing large volumes of documents and emails

What We're Looking ForTechnical Foundation

  • 2+ years of backend development experience with Python or similar object-oriented languages
  • Strong experience with API integrations (REST, GraphQL, OAuth flows, webhooks)
  • Experience with document processing PDF parsing, OCR, or data extraction
  • Solid SQL skills and understanding of data modeling
  • Test-driven development mindset with strong unit and integration testing practices
  • Understanding of how LLM-based systems work (to design good interfaces for AI consumption)

Nice to Have

  • Computer vision or document AI experience (image classification, object detection, layout analysis)
  • Experience with browser automation (Playwright, Puppeteer) and web scraping
  • Background in ML engineering, particularly applied CV
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and containerized deployments
  • Experience with workflow orchestration (Temporal)

Human Qualities

  • Craftsmanship: Pride in the details your code, your tools, and the systems you build
  • Empathy for the Problem: Curiosity to understand how your work improves the experience of others, even when you don't meet them directly
  • Learning Mindset: Eager to master both the technical how and the business why
  • Test Obsession: Belief that untested code is unfinished code quality is non-negotiable
  • Team Player: Collaborative, thoughtful, and motivated to contribute to a positive engineering culture

You'll Love This Role If...

  • You take pride in building reliable systems that just work no flakiness, no edge case surprises
  • You love working with APIs and making different systems talk to each other cleanly
  • You're obsessed with test coverage and get satisfaction from catching edge cases before they hit production
  • You enjoy the challenge of extracting clean data from messy, real-world inputs
  • You want to build the foundational capabilities that power AI applications

What Makes You Stand Out

  • You've built systems that process real-world, messy data at scale
  • You can show us test suites you're proud of and explain your testing philosophy
  • You've debugged integration nightmares and have war stories about API quirks
  • You're curious about computer vision and excited to apply ML to document understanding
  • You already use AI coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor, Claude, Gemini) daily to write better code and tests faster
  • Experience working on remote or cross-cultural teams
  • Background in B2B SaaS development

Working Across Timezones

Our US-based founders are 16 hours away from our Taiwan engineering team. This means async communication is essential not optional. You'll need strong written English skills to document decisions, explain technical approaches, and collaborate effectively without real-time meetings.

We value engineers who over-communicate in writing, think through edge cases before asking questions, and can work autonomously while staying aligned with the team.

AI-Native Engineering

We're building AI that lawyers trust to do real work. We want engineers who already trust AI to do real work alongside them.

Our team uses AI tools daily for coding, debugging, documentation, research, and problem-solving. We expect you to have your own workflow with tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Copilot, or Cursor, and to have developed opinions about when AI helps and when it gets in the way. This isn't about replacing engineering judgment; it's about amplifying it.

Compensation

  • USD $48,000$72,000 / NTD 1,500,0002,200,000 + equity
