ROLE SUMMARY
The Civil Architect is responsible for the design, planning, and oversight of architectural and civil aspects of data center facilities. This role ensures that buildings meet functional, operational, and mission-critical requirements, including reliability, scalability, security, and compliance. The position works closely with civil, structural, and MEP teams to deliver high-performance data center infrastructure.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Architectural & Civil Design
• Lead architectural design of data center facilities, including layout, façade, and internal space planning.
• Develop and prepare specifications.
• Review detailed design drawings, specifications and models
• Ensure optimal space utilization for white space, support areas, and future expansion.
• Integrate civil works (site grading, roads, drainage) into overall design.
Data Center Planning & Standards
• Ensure designs align with data center standards (e.g., Uptime Tier III/IV, TIA-942).
• Design for high availability, redundancy, and operational efficiency.
• Address critical factors such as fire separation, security zoning, and airflow containment support.
• Incorporate scalability and modular expansion strategies.
Project Delivery & Coordination
• Support new builds, retrofits, and expansion projects.
• Coordinate with structural, MEP, and ICT teams for integrated facility design.
• Review contractor submissions, shop drawings, and materials.
• Monitor construction progress and ensure adherence to design intent.
Compliance & Regulatory Management
• Ensure compliance with local building codes, zoning laws, and fire safety requirements.
• Liaise with authorities for planning approvals and permits.
• Ensure environmental and sustainability requirements are met (e.g., Green Mark, LEED).
Operations Support
• Support facility operations with layout modifications and upgrades.
• Conduct site inspections to ensure building integrity and usability.
• Assist in resolving architectural issues impacting operations or capacity.
Vendor & Stakeholder Management
• Manage external architects, consultants, and contractors.
• Collaborate with internal teams (engineering, operations, security).
• Present design concepts and updates to stakeholders and leadership.
QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
QUALIFICATION
● Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, or related disciplines.
COMPETENCY AND BEHAVIORAL SKILLS
• Above 10 years of experience in architecture/civil design.
• At least 5 years in data center, mission-critical, or high-tech facilities.
• Experience in large-scale infrastructure projects (industrial, commercial, or hyperscale DCs).
• In-depth understanding of local design standards and regulations.
• Proficiency in architectural design tools (AutoCAD, Revit/BIM, SketchUp).
• Strong knowledge of building systems, materials, and construction methods.
• Familiarity with data center layouts, security zoning, and support infrastructure.
• Understanding of integration with MEP systems.
• Strong design thinking with a practical engineering mindset.
• With international and APAC work exposure, especially in Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore.
• Strong network within data center ecosystem with regulatory authorities, business partners, vendors, suppliers, and clients etc. is an advantage.
• Excellent coordination and stakeholder management skills.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to work in high-pressure, uptime-critical environments.
• Result oriented and goal driven with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Certifications (Preferred)
• Registered Architect (RA) or equivalent professional accreditation.
• LEED / Green Mark certification is a plus.
• Familiarity with Uptime Institute standards.
