Key job responsibilities

Collaborate with vendors/manufacturers to develop and evaluate new hardware and software solutions and come up with implementation plans for incorporating them into the network
Designing and floorplanning complex layouts (electronic-photonics) and meeting design rule checking.
Working with foundries to generate and submit proper design files.
Focus on ambiguous problem areas in existing or new optical component and systems development initiatives, propose and deliver projects that have a significant business and/or customer impact.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues
Maintain documentation, drawings, and design files

A day in the life

On an everyday basis as an engineer or scientist on our team, you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers requirement on interconnect solutions, and work backwards to devise hardware solutions by influencing the broad industry and/or to develop software tools with sister teams to maintain a highly available network that delights AWS customers. You design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way, while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.

You'll bridge design, construction, and operations, ensuring that every layer of physical networking—from fiber trunks to copper patching to optical transceivers—meets high standards of performance, reliability, and scalability.

About The Team

Within AWS Networking, the Network Product Development (NPD) organization is responsible for designing the hardware, building the software, and owning the interconnects for the routers that power the global AWS network. Beyond product delivery, we actively manage the fleet or routers in a network that grows by 70% annually. This means tracking key business and operational metrics to ensure that we operate smoothly and minimize or eliminate customer impact due to device related issues for a transparent AWS customer experience.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physcis, Telecommunications, or related field or equivalent experience
3+ years of hands-on experience with optical and/or electrical component and system design
3 years of experience developing IC/PCB layout, foundry design files, and EDA tools.
2+ years of experience developing electronic or photonic integrated components.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with optical transceivers development
Master's degree and 3+ years of industry or academic research experience.
Expertise in hardware and systems design and development; Experience with design and manufacturing pluggable optics (i.e SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP-DD, OSFP)
Experience working in hyperscale cloud, AI or high-performance computing environments.
Experience working with ODM and CM suppliers of Optical Modules
